Midweek Games

Sydney FC v. Wellington Phoenix(3-1)

Mark Bridge and Alex Brosque took Sydney to within 1 points of 6th place, as the Killer B’s returned to form against the homesick Phoenix.
The performance of Bridge will please the Sky Blues faithful the most, as the striker scored his first goal in 13 matches (and first of the season) and looked dangerous throughout the tie.
Brendan Gan scored the opener from a brilliant Bridge cross in the 16th minute, while the former Jet and Brosque also had chances in the first half. Wellington had two good opportunities as well but Necevski was up to the task.
Bridge then struck in the 73rd minute just when Sydney needed it, with Wellington starting to come back into the game and perhaps unlucky not to have registered an equaliser.
Bridge then turned provider as he released Brosque for the third, yet Wellington players were furious as handball preceding the goal went unnoticed.
The Phoenix grabbed a consolation goal through Macallister7 minutes from time, yet Sydney’s clinical finishing finally provided them with a win which could help their charge into the top six.

Gold Coast United v. North Queensland Fury(1-2)

The Fury won their first away game of the season last night, against a Gold Coast side who were missing 8 players due to injury and suspension.
United took the lead through Robson in the 10th minute, his free kick taking a wicked deflection that deceived Pastfield and trickled in the net. Terrible goal.
Yet Williams equalised in the 28th with what could possibly prove to be the goal of the season. Bloody amazing goal, really look it up. Shit. From about 30 yards out, on the left hand side…Man who shoots from there?
Ufuk Talay then sealed the points with a classy free kick in the 68th.
Gold Coast were obviously missing their star players, expecially Captain Jason Culina, while Steve Pantelidis had to withdraw just before Talay’s winner, leaving the side without much drive through midfield.
Franz will be hoping this win is the start of a North Queensland revival and hopefully the team can grab a few more wins. Starting after their game against the Jets of course…
