Blackburn have completed their long awaited take-over after being on the market for around two years. Asian Poultry organisation Venky, who are based in India, have bought the club for 46 million pounds. They have an estimated value of 1 billion pounds. Could this be the beginning of another Premier League winning side, such as the one Jack Warner bought in the mid-90s??
Paul the Octopus has died at the ripe old age of two. Poor guy. In case you were living under a rock during the World Cup, this sea creature managed to predict the result of all Germany’ matches, as well as the Spanish victory over the Dutch in the final. He was then retired from the oracle business, yet his last prediction was that England would win the rights to host the 2018 World Cup. Let’s hope his last act was correct. Good on him.
The nominees for the Ballon d’Or have been announced and you can see the list here. There are seven Spaniards in the list, yet my prediction would have to be Wesley Sneider, after a brilliant season where he won the Seria A and Champions League with Inter, before getting to the Final of the World Cup with Holland.
To the Championship and former West Brom manager Tony Mowbray has been announced as the new manager for Middlesbrough. This comes after Gordon Strachan resigned from the club last week, with the North-East club struggling in 18th position. He is a former captain of the club and made over 400 appearances for them over a 9-year period before being sold to Celtic. Middlesbrough came a disappointing 11th last year and they will be hoping Mowbray can inspire a charge into the play-offs this season.
In transfer news and Tottenham have confirmed that South African Bongoni Khumalo will sign for them in January. The defender has been on trial with Spurs since September and is believed to have attracted a 1.5 million pound offer. he is 23 and attracted suitors during the 2010 World Cup.
Man Utd. have also been linked with the first player since they announced there would be funds available in January (believed to be 100 million) after talks with Wayne Rooney about the future of the club. Midfielder Steven Defour, who plays for Standard Liege in Belgium has hinted that there could be a move from Man Utd in January. The 22-year-old International is very highly rated in his native Belgium.
And that is all. Carling Cup games start tonight, with the Toon in action tomorrow…
