I can’t say I looked at the Premier League in depth this weekend, but I watched the highlights and there were a few good games going on…
Liverpool losing 2-1 at home to Blackpool was the major shock, their season just seems to get worse and worse. Blackpool had raced into 2-0 lead by half time and the Reds couldn’t manage to get back into the game. Even worse, was an injury to Fernando Torres in the 10th minute. Krygiakos smashed a fine header from a Gerard free kick early in the second half, however Liverpool couldn’t find an equaliser despite Cole and Krygaikos both going close.
Man Utd also slipped up with a 0-0 draw to Sunderland. Ferguson had named second-string players such as Owen and Macheda in the starting eleven and the gamble didn’t pay off as the Red Devils struggled to find a breakthrough.
Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-0 in the game of the week. It was an entertaining fixture with chances falling for both sides, however Chelsea managed to prevail thanks to goals from Drogba and Alex. Both Chamakh and Koscielny headed chances wide and over, with the French defender’s effort a particularly bad miss from 2 yards out.
Arsenal dominated most of the possession, however, Chelsea took the lead through nice back heel from Drogba at the near post after good build up play from Ramires and Ashley Cole.
Chamakh again missed a good chance in the second half, before Alex thumped a 30-yard free kick into the net in the 85th minute to seal the points.
Wigan defeated Wolves 2-0 in their match. Wolves player Karl Henry getting sent off early in the 10th minute for a hectic two-footed challenge. Jordi Gomez and Rodallega got the goals.
Everton finally got their season underway with a 2-0 away win at Birmingham City. Johnson scored an own goal for the home side, while Timmy Cahill got the second with a header from a Leighton Baines cross.
Stoke beat Blackburn 1-0 with a dominant display. Brett Emerton had a chance for the hosts but saw his dipping volley cleared off the goal line.
Van der Vaart continued his blistering form for Tottenham, scoring twice against Aston Villa in a 2-1 win. Villa took the lead through youngster Mark Albrighton, however Spurs continued their good form, Van der Vaart looking like the bargain of the season so far.
West Brom and Bolton shared the points with a 1-1 draw. Johan Elmander looks like finally living up to his 8 million transfer a few years back, scoring his 4th goal this season, while he has managed only 8 in his previous two.
West Ham and Fulham also drew 1-1. It was Fulham’s 6th draw out of 7 games this season, while West Ham fell to the bottom of the table despite a relatively positive result.
So Man City go 2nd after their dog win over the Toon, though Chelsea are still 5 points clear. Liverpool, Wolves and West Ham make up the bottom three..
That is all.
