The Champions League, amazing, the best competition in the world started on Wednesday morning and brought a few treats. I have only seen the highlights for the Wednesday morning games, while I watched the end of the Man Utd v Rangers games and all of the Barca v. Panathinaikos match.
Barca put in a clinical display, one of best you could hope for, smashing the Greek outfit 5-1 when it could have easily been 10-1. Messi in particular shined, epitomized by his second goal, which involved two one-twos before smashing the ball in the net. I have written a match report, which is attached down the bottom.
So I’ll just do a few matches from the Champs League then. Man Utd struggled against Rangers with a 0-0 draw and didn’t play their best, though Ferguson fielded an almost reserve side.
Tottenham raced into a 2-goal lead against Werder Bremen in their first Champions League match, yet couldn’t hold on, eventually finishing 2-2. Van der Vaart’s substitution early in the second half seemed to affect the London side.
Inter could only draw with FC Twente 2-2 as they started their defence of the Champions League, while Valencia put four past Turkish side Bursaspor 4-0.
On Thursday, Arsenal were the pick of the bunch, beating Portuguese outfit Braga 6-0. I really wish I had watched the game as apparently Fabregas put in another beautiful performance. I love watching the Arsenal play, especially Fabregas, he is a genius.
Bayern beat Roma 2-0, Chelsea also won comfortably 4-1 against Slovakian first timers MSK Zilina. And Mourinho got his first Champions League win with Real Madrid, in a 2-0 win over French team Auxerre. AC Milan also won 2-0 against Ajax.
So that’s a wrap up of the first round of Group Stage games, no point going into the tables as their only one game old. This weekend I will do a better job reporting on the games. Hopefully have a preview done by late tonight or tomorrow morning.
